If you’ve been following along with my Insta stories, you’ll know I was feverishly sharing the events of the #jonaswedding. Aside from being obsessed with the two and their breathtaking wedding (I mean seriously, it was borderline Royal Wedding levels regal), I’m actually sharing for a much larger reason.

Aside from the Royal Wedding earlier this year, this is one of the first times multicultural couples are being highlighted in mainstream media

Despite the numerous multicultural couples globally, we rarely see them represented in mainstream media. As we all know, those in the spotlight are often times what many people aspire to and they set the standard for what we deem “acceptable”. Similarly as women and people of color are seeking more representation in the media, it’s really refreshing to see a multicultural and interfaith couple in the limelight.

It was an example of how people from different faiths and cultures can come together and equally celebrate each background

“One of the most special things that our relationship has given us is the merging of families who love and respect each other’s faiths and cultures. And so our wedding with an amalgamation of both was so amazing,” the actress wrote on Instagram.

The two families honored and celebrated each religion and cultural background. They first held a Christian ceremony in the states and later flew to India to have a traditional Hindu wedding.

“I love that our wedding was a religious mash-up. We took beautiful traditions that we both grew up with and personalized them in a way that made sense for us. It’s been incredible to find the commonalities between our beliefs and figuring out how to blend them in a respectful and meaningful way,” Chopra explained in a PEOPLE magazine interview.

Girl, you are giving us all the feels!

The wedding led to the education of a different culture

Throughout their wedding week, the mainstream media covered and explained the meaning of various element of the Hindu wedding and Indian culture.

It was really wonderful to see the media use this as an opportunity to educate the masses on some of the traditions of another culture and religion. After all, education is what helps us understand our differences and come together.

And I’ll just come out and say it, hopefully it was another reminder that turbans do not equate to terrorism. Nick absolutely rocked the look!

Despite their differences, everyone around them became one big family

As seen in the engagement and wedding, their mom’s have become BFFs and each family is clearly very excited to join forces.

“Nick’s family members are such lovely human beings. They were completely fine with the blend of the cultures and Nick is immensely respectful and well-spoken. He makes sure everyone around him comfortable. He’s the best son-in-law one could ask for,” Priyanka’s Mom explained in an interview with DNA.

I hope this wedding will be the first of many multicultural fusions highlighted in mainstream media to demonstrate the simplicity and beauty of human connection. May we all use this example to remember that we are all of the same race: the human race. Let’s continue to embrace and celebrate the things that make us different and especially the things that will always connect us – love!
